Star Formation in the Milky Way and Nearby Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
We review progress over the past decade in observations of large-scale star formation, with a focus on the interface between extragalactic and Galactic studies. Methods of measuring gas contents and star formation rates are discussed, and updated prescriptions for calculating star formation rates are provided. We review relations between star formation and gas on scales ranging from entire galaxies to individual molecular clouds. Subject headings: star formation, galaxies, Milky Way

Impact of Reionization on the Stellar Populations of Nearby Dwarf Galaxies
Cold dark matter models for galaxy formation predict that low-mass systems will be the first sites of star formation. As these objects have shallow gravitational potential wells, the subsequent growth of their stellar populations may be halted by heating and gas loss due to reionization. This effect has been suggested to have profoundly influenced properties of present-day dwarf galaxies, inclu...

Based on recent X-ray observations of the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds and nearby starburst galaxies we study population of high mass X-ray binaries, their connection with ultra-luminous X-ray sources and relation to the star formation. Although more subtle SFR dependent effects are likely to exist, the data in the lg(LX) ∼ 36 − 40.5 luminosity range are broadly consistent with existence of a "...
متن کاملGLOBAL STAR FORMATION FROM z = 5 × 10 −8 to z = 20 LEO
Starting with the assertion that the problem of isolated, single star formation is essentially solved, this paper examines some of the missing steps needed to go from there to understanding the star formation history of the Universe. Along the way, some results on the formation of star clusters in the Milky Way and the properties of GMCs in nearby galaxies are briefly examined.
متن کاملNearby Galaxies: Templates for Galaxies Across Cosmic Time
Studies of nearby galaxies including the Milky Way have provided fundamental information on the evolution of structure in the Universe, the existence and nature of dark matter, the origin and evolution of galaxies, and the global features of star formation. Yet despite decades of work, many of the most basic aspects of galaxies and their environments remain a mystery. In this paper we describe ...
متن کاملThe Star Formation Relation in Nearby Galaxies
I review observational studies of the large-scale star formation process in nearby galaxies. A wealth of new multi-wavelength data provide an unprecedented view on the interplay of the interstellar medium and (young) stellar populations on a few hundred parsec scale in 100+ galaxies of all types. These observations enable us to relate detailed studies of star formation in the Milky Way to the z...
